Package: sysvinit
Version: 2.84-2woody1
Severity: normal

On a very heavily loaded server box, I can see /sbin/init (PID 1)
stuck in the R (running state). Strangely enough, it does not use any
CPU (per /proc/1/stat*), but it does not answer to any request,
meaning that:

 - shutdown is impossible

 - zombies accumulate

 - I can't run `telinit q' either...

I'm at loss here because PID 1 is untracable...

I've seen the bug manifest itself very frequently (at least once a
week) lately although /sbin/init has not changed for 2 years.

I've seen that sysvinit 2.85-x contains a fix for a race where syslog
was called reentrantly.

I'm going to try to run 2.84-2woody1 + 2.85's src/init.[ch] and report
how it goes.

Phil.
