Package: sylpheed
Version: 2.6.0-3
Severity: normal

As of the latest version in testing. This is kind of important to me
personally, as I rely on this behavior.

It used to happen just by default, with no configuration required. A good
candidate for where one *should* be able to configure this behavior is in
the Configuration -> Edit Accounts... -> Edit dialog, where in the "Basic"
tab one finds a "Protocol" dropdown list. And in that list there is
currently a "None (local)" option. This currently seems to allow one to
queue messages to the local machines e-mail server, and it would also seem
logical that this setting should pull messages off of the user's
/var/spool/mail/username mail box.

Glad to hear that :) at least is a known bug.

Indeed, but it was forwarded to upstream author more than four years ago
and I've received any response regarding this nor seen any mention this is
fixed in the ChangeLog, so I guess chances are low.
