Package: dovecot-common
Version: 1.1.13-2

Package: libicu40
Version: 4.0.1-2

Since the update at 2009/04/02 08:00 Dovecot dies on startup at the
auth-process with the following message:

[ /var/log/syslog ]
dovecot-auth: error while loading shared libraries: libicudata.so.40:
failed to map segment from shared object: Cannot allocate memory

I've got about 250 MB free memory, so this can't be the cause.

I'm using Debian Kernel-Version 2.6.26-1-amd64

These are comments from the Steffen:

Hi Jay,

this is my entry mapping:

a) DIES WITH ERROR
those setting i had beforte upgrading to the newer version and they
worked. with the new version they didn't work.

b) SUGGESTED
these are the debian defaults.

c) WORKS
these ain't defaults, most of them are lower than the defaults because
of ram limititations on my server. but also they are higher than my old
values in a). these setting work with the new version.

I came up with the WORKS setting by trail & error and I now use them for
production service.

cheers,
steffen

This suggests to me that there is no bug here. The problem is most
likely just that libicudata40.so, which is a shared library containing
only data and no code, contains more data thus making Steffen's
previous configurations too low for the requirements of the newer ICU.
Basically, ICU 4.0 requires more memory to load properly than did ICU
3.8. I don't think this is something that can be reasonably fixed.

I am therefore going to close this bug. Please reopen if you believe
my analysis is flawed or wish to track this in some other fashion.
Thanks for the report.
