gnome requires gnome-games which leads to even more bloat. Surely
gnome-games (and probably other stuff) should be optional? Or do we need
a gnome-minimal package?
Debian systems used to be elegant and efficient, but there seems to be a
recent trend towards bloat and trying to ape Redmond. That was one of
the many reasons some of us fled from there many years ago :-)
I realize that one can remove gnome and replace with a selection of
packages, but that is very tedious and long winded.

You already have gnome-core and gnome-desktop-environment.
We are not going to add new metapackages for each possible package
combination that people might want. The brdesktop-gnome joke is already
more than enough.
