Package: sysvinit
Version: 2.86.ds1-38

libc6 version: 2.6-2

Bug appears in two kernel versions.
2.6.18-4-amd64 #1 SMP Fri May 4 00:37:33 UTC 2007 x86_64 GNU/Linux
2.6.21-2-amd64 #1 SMP Fri Jul 13 10:58:39 UTC 2007 x86_64 GNU/Linux # backports

No getty processes are running after boot. After `logout`, getty is not respawned.
This occurs regardless of whether I use the default getty configuration in
inittab or the alternative fbgetty package.

# getty never runs under this default setting
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty1
2:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty2
3:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty3
4:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty4
5:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty5
6:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty6
# fbgetty never runs under this alternate setting
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/fbgetty --issue=/etc/issue.fg /dev/tty1 /dev/fb0
2:23:respawn:/sbin/fbgetty --issue=/etc/issue.fg /dev/tty2 /dev/fb0
3:23:respawn:/sbin/fbgetty --issue=/etc/issue.fg /dev/tty3 /dev/fb0
4:23:respawn:/sbin/fbgetty --issue=/etc/issue.fg /dev/tty4 /dev/fb0
5:23:respawn:/sbin/fbgetty --issue=/etc/issue.fg /dev/tty5
6:23:respawn:/sbin/fbgetty --issue=/etc/issue.fg /dev/tty6

I also want PPP to run from inittab but, like getty, it does not run after boot.
# Let the m105 make PPP connections on COM1
palm:2345:respawn:/usr/sbin/pppd /dev/ttyS0 115200 192.168.1.201:192.168.1.200 persist noauth

If I open a xterm and manually type
/sbin/fbgetty --issue=/etc/issue.fg /dev/tty2 /dev/fb0 &
that console is usable up until I logout of it.

I got no reply to my question, and assume the problem was the reuse of
IDs that was fixed by changing IDs. Because of this, I am closing.

Happy hacking,
