the gui controls do not initialize. it's still possible to play video

Set a breakpoint in 'libvlc_exception_not_handled' to debug.
if i rm -rf .vlc and .cache/vlc, and then run vlc -vvv --color --list
once (yeah, that's wierd...), vlc starts up the gui on subsequent calls.
however, i don't think this is really acceptable as a fix[1] as afaict all
users will be hit by this issue when it comes time to go lenny->squeeze.

[1] that is to say, without some kind of diagnostic message at least so the
user doesn't waste a bunch of time googling and searching bug reports.
