OpenAFS prior to 1.4.8 has a bug that causes spurious permission
denied errors when accessing subversion repositories hosted in AFS:
http://rt.central.org/rt/Ticket/Display.html?id=74672

The above ticket includes a script that reproduces the bug with high
probability.

This issue affects a large number of users here at MIT, and it would
be really nice to get it fixed in Lenny. The issue is fixed in the
upstream delta linux-revalidate-renames-correctly-20080707, which is
essentially a two-line fix that should be easily backportable.

There are now backports of openafs 1.4.11 available from backports.org,
which I think is the best solution to this problem. I would recommend
most people use those instead of the versions that shipped with lenny,
since there are lots of other bug fixes in that version.
