I'm working on a wav file, trying to clean up various problems in
it. So I'm working through a few of the effects, trying them out to
see what they do for me. If I select a filter then hit Cancel
immediately then all is well. If I select a filter, hit Preview to
hear the effect then Cancel to go back (i.e. it hasn't made the
difference I hoped for), the audacity interface hangs completely. :-(

I had the same problems. This bug was fixed in 1.3.6 or 1.3.7 IIRC and
it is definitely fixed in 1.3.9.
