ftp is crashing when the first command executed after starting the client
(whether connecting to a server or not) is a local shell command with at
least two arguments.
One argument is fine:
$ ftp
ftp> !ls

Two arguments are fine on the second command:
$ ftp
ftp> prompt
Interactive mode off.
ftp> !ls -l
total 0

But as the first command, it's a problem:
