Package: svgatextmode
Version: 1.9-21

Installation of svgatextmode forces removal of console-tools and forces
installation of kbd, even if kbd-compat is installed. svgatextmode
works just fine with console-tools, if suitably configured. The
"Depends" section of the package currently says,

Depends: kbd (>= 1.12-18), libc6 (>= 2.7-1)

Perhaps this should say

Depends: kbd (>= 1.12-18) | console-tools (>= 1:0.2.3dbs-65.1),
libc6 (>= 2.7-1)

Better yet, remove both kbd and console-tools from the "Depends" section
and add them to the "Recommends" section. Strictly speaking, neither
package is required if the "LoadFont" option is not set in /etc/TextConfig.
Besides, one package or the other is going to be part of the "standard
system" anyway.

Except console-tools is supposed to be scheduled for removal from the
archive now ...

... which would make depending on it even more troublesome than that
otherwise would be. They aren't compatible with each other, and I
don't see much point in trying to hide that if one is really going away.
So we depend on the one that it is configured to use by default.
Which was supposed to be the only one left about now ...

That one package is (was?) supposed to be kbd.

See http://bugs.debian.org/387118 and http://bugs.debian.org/444006
for some history on the back and forth related to console handling.

Alastair, what is happening with this now? This was supposed to happen
post-etch, we're now post-lenny, and there is consolekit on the horizon
now too ...

Cheers,
Ron
