When the user starts up, he is given a connection list, with
just two choices, connect and cancel. He should be given a further
button: a button to proceed to the next [main] window, without making
a connection.

Hey,
it's possible now (don't know exactly since when or which version, but
it is at the current one). Just enable the option of "No server list at
startup", and you're done with it.
