Package: apticron
Version: 1.1.27
Severity: important
The apticron spawned by cron was sleeping for days, rendering aptitude
and apt-get useless because of the held lock.
After killing the sleeping command "apt-get -qq update" I received the
following output of cron per mail:
--------
gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
/usr/sbin/apticron: line 111: 26889 Terminated
/usr/bin/apt-get -qq update
--------
Afterwards the command "/usr/sbin/apticron" typed in by hand runs
successfully.
Perhaps, this has to do with the following, mentioned in the apt-get
manpage (see last line):
---------
-q, --quiet
Quiet; produces output suitable for logging, omitting progress
indicators. More qÂŽs will produce more quiet up to a maximum of 2.
You can also use -q=# to set the quiet level, overriding the
configuration file. Note that quiet level 2 implies -y, you should
never use -qq without a no-action modifier such as -d,

As stated in the last forwarded email, this issue seems to be caused by an
incident which is not related to apticron. Thanks to Kai Moritz for reporting.
