Hi,
After the last upgrade of gnus, i have two different directories on my
system for the .el and .elc files relatives to gnus.
1) /usr/share/emacs/21.4/lisp/gnus (the old one)
2) /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/gnus (the new one)
in the first directory the version number of gnus.el is 5.9.0 ;
in the second one, the version number is (No Gnus) 0.4
I wonder if having two different versions of gnus cannot cause
troubles...

This is normal. Emacs comes with one version of Gnus, and the
stand alone package provides another. This has always been the case.
