Hi Jonathan,
This is a regression. I do not remember which version the problem
started to really manifest itself, probably the last two weeks (it is
Aug 9 today).
Several repositories do not include 'Release' or 'Release.gpg' files. When
'apt-get update' tries to download these it appears that data is
available, that is the line has a number in brackets and the status line
starts at '0%'. Looking in the apt-cacher cache directory, there are
several '.notify' files in the 'private/' directory and the 'headers/'
directory contains the headers from the servers with the 404 statuses.
Looking at the headers, the value of the 'Content-Length' header of the
404 status is what is being sent to 'apt-get update' for the length of
the file. The end result being that 'apt-get update' takes a LONG time
to complete, since each unavailable file has to time out.
Some of the repositories I am using with missing Release files:
deb http://www/apt-cacher/dijkstra.csh.rit.edu/~mdz/debian unstable mythtv
deb http://www/apt-cacher/people.debian.org/~costela/debian ./
deb http://www/apt-cacher/debian.isg.ee.ethz.ch/public sarge ibm-acpi
Cheers,
Johnny
