Since my last attempt at setting up Debian SELinux, sudoedit
produces strange output:

Ideas?

This was a bug report of the worst kind. Had nothing to do with
selinux as far as I can tell, so should not have filed so. Moreover,
there was no reason to link this to selinux-basics except a
coincidence in timing.
Will investigate more and refile appropriately (as a sudo bug,
probably).
