Package: gidentd
Version: 0.4.5-7
Severity: normal
We've noticed that every once in a while gidentd fails to respond to
a query and just times out. This has a bit of a nasty effect when
ident is being used locally to determine access to a database, which
is in turn used to dynamically generate website data. When gidentd
times out, that web page then becomes inaccessible. To give you an
idea of the frequency, a grep of the syslog shows:

authentication failed for user "www-data"

Although it is mostly observed by our web developer while frequently
refreshing a page to test a php script, it happens frequently enough
to worry about visitors sometimes seeing a long delay followed by a
database error message instead of the page they were expecting. After
the timeout, a page refresh will clear up the problem (i.e. it doesn't
seem to fail twice in a row).
Please let me know if there's any further information I can provide to
help debug this.
