I think I found a bug in your package. It was found by using binutils-gold as 
linker.

I got information from the author why it fails and it seems that your package 
does something wrong and not the linker.

/usr/bin/ld: syms: unknown -z option

I think you come a bit too late.
Current version is 3.3.bl.3.dfsg-8 and no longer uses that option.
