Hi,
Some cd/dvd writers don't handle it correctly when their media status is
polled while burning. To prevent this both hal and magicdev open cd devices
in exclusive mode (with O_EXCL). This ensures that they don't poll for media
status when another program has the device open with O_EXCL and thus solves
potential burning failures.
Ofcourse for this to work a burning program should also open the cd/dvd
device with O_EXCL. From looking at the package source, it seems that that is
currently not the case.
For some more information/discussion see also bug #262678 against cdrecord.
