Severity: normal

Hi,

I have two VPN tunnels between two sites, and the above route.

I would have expected the part of the route that points through tun1 to
disappear when tun1 goes down; however, the kernel forgets the entire route.

This is bad, because it makes failover more difficult, because it is not
the expected behaviour, and because it is probably always wrong (i.e. the
explicit route was there for a reason, otherwise the default route would
have sufficed).

So, to reiterate what one would expect and what actually happens:

Expected behaviour: if there are routes to a destination through several
interfaces, and one of those interfaces goes down, drop the route through
that interface, but retain the other routes towards that destination.

Actual behaviour: if there are routes to a destination through several
interfaces, and one of those interfaces goes down, drop all routes to that
destination and fall back to using the default gateway.

As far as I can tell, the actual behaviour is always wrong.

I realize this is probably a kernel bug, not an iproute issue, but I thought
the report would reach the right people sooner if I filed it against
iproute.

Andrew
