Package: dhcp
Version: 2.0pl5-19.1
Severity: normal
Hi, i was unable to make the filename feature work, in order to provide
next-server and filename to my powerbook for booting d-i, i had to provide the
filename manually on the open firmware command line.
Here is what demon told me on irc :
13:03 < svenl> i am searching for help on how to netboot a powerbook.
13:03 < svenl> i have the dhcp server setup to point next-server to the tftp
server, but i only get a DHCPINFORM request from the powerbook, and the dhcp
server never replies to it.
13:06 < svenl> hey, that did the trick, still it doesn't seem to be doing the
right thing.
13:22 < demon> svenl: are you using a patched dhcpd?
13:23 < demon> there's a patch floating around that changes the order of the
DHCP options in the dhcp server responses, because Apple made the (post
blue&white) newworld OF ROM netboot support depend on that (and
a few proprietary option fields) for netbooting
13:24 < demon> as a shortcut, you can specify the server and path you want it
to load via TFTP, and it'll just DHCP for an address
13:24 < demon> boot [ip],\path\to\file
13:24 < demon> er
13:24 < demon> boot enet:[ip],\path\to\file
13:24 < demon> even
13:27 < svenl> demon: nope, plain one from debian.
13:27 < svenl> demon: it seems the filename thingy is not respected by the
powerbook or something.
13:28 < svenl> yep, i did that, and it is working now.
13:28 < svenl> (i have no such troubles on my pegasos though).
13:28 < svenl> demon: do you know if those patches above was submitted to the
debian package or something ?
13:29 < demon> not to my knowledge, no, since it is totally unofficial
13:29 < svenl> do you have the address to those patches or any hint on how
they should be ?
13:29 < svenl> demon: i will maybe fill a bug report about those. can i quote
you in it ?
13:31 < demon> http://mike.passwall.com/macnc/ahowto.html#PATCHES
13:31 < demon> there are patches there against the 2.0.x and 3.0.x ISC DHCPd
sources
13:31 < demon> yeah, sure
It would be nice if the default debian dhcp server could be fixed about this
(maybe made to recognize it is an Apple laptop asking and do the right
ordering ? the DHCPINFORM request definitively knows it is an apple hardware,
and even the exact model, as ethereal told me).
Friendly,
Sven Luther

You filed the bug http://bugs.debian.org/327820 in Debian BTS
against the package dhcp. I'm closing it at *unstable*, but it will
remain open for older distributions.
For more information about this package's removal, read
http://bugs.debian.org/446386. That bug might give the reasons why
this package was removed and suggestions of possible replacements.
Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.
Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
