Package: nvidia-kernel-2.4.26-1-k7
Version: 1.0.6111+1
Severity: important
When I startup my system, X wont start. A line in the XFree86.0.log says:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device!
But when I then, just after logging in at
the console, try to start X from the console (either
using '/etc/init.d/kdm/restart' or just 'X') all runs
fine! X comes up and I get a working system.

This bug was reported quite some time ago against a previous major version
of the kernel and a much older version of the NVIDIA drivers. I suspect
that whatever problem was occuring has been long-since fixed.
Even if this is not the case, I'm afraid that all that Debian can do is
provide the binary drivers as released by NVIDIA, for good or for ill.
Since the drivers are not free software, we can't fix any problems with
them except in the rare cases where the problems are in the kernel
compatibility layer or the packaging. If you're still having trouble, I
recommend reporting the problem directly to NVIDIA and see if they can
help.
