Maybe because of the new python-apt API, update-notifier no
longer notifies of available updates. The failure point seems to
be in function 'update_check' of update-notifier.c, which calls
python script '/usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check', which either
silently fails or is not reading the package cache correctly.
If I manually run apt-check, many deprecation warnings:
