Package: fileutils
Version: 4.1-7
Severity: normal

Having recieved a question from a user about the meaning of the mode
information presented by "ls -l", I was hoping to just be able to say
"RTFM". Unfortunately, TFM (fileutils.info) seems to be somewhat
lacking in this area.

In the node "What information is listed", we're told that "The
permissions listed are similar to symbolic mode specifications (*note
Symbolic Modes::)", and the meanings of "s", "S", "t", "T", "x", and
"-" in the execute bits are explained.

The node "Symbolic Modes" explains the syntax used by chmod(1), but
not that used by ls(1). In consequence, the following remain
unexplained:

- The meaning of the first character, which indicates the file type.
- The order of the "rwx" groups.
- The meaning of "-" in such a group.

You filed the bug http://bugs.debian.org/122695 in Debian BTS
against the package fileutils. I'm closing it at *unstable*, but it will
remain open for older distributions.

I was unable to find a bug that explains the reason for its removal,
but it appears to have been superceded by coreutils (which is an
essential package) on Mon, 30 Sep 2002 12:24:37 -0400.
I have decided not forward these bugs to coreutils, since a lot
could have been changed in these 8 years. If your issue is still
reproducible or still valid, do not hesitate to reopen and reassign
it or reply to this email.

Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.

Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
