Package: fileutils
Version: 3.16-5
Severity: wishlist
As I can see it, install can automate 2 types of tasks:
* ownership, perms, timestamps, and other things that do not affect
the actual contents of the installed files.
* stripping, which does affect the contents.
I think it may be worth adding a feature that would allow install to
compress installed files. As several compressors are available, maybe
it would be even better to allow specifying a generic filtering
command. Maybe --strip could then be reimplemented in terms of this
new feature, but I realize `strip' does not allow filtering.
Probably some other uses of this mechanism can be worked out, still
with the idea of simplying rule-writter's tasks.
Just 2 more cents - it may also turn out not to be a good idea ;)

You filed the bug http://bugs.debian.org/21750 in Debian BTS
against the package fileutils. I'm closing it at *unstable*, but it will
remain open for older distributions.
I was unable to find a bug that explains the reason for its removal,
but it appears to have been superceded by coreutils (which is an
essential package) on Mon, 30 Sep 2002 12:24:37 -0400.
I have decided not forward these bugs to coreutils, since a lot
could have been changed in these 8 years. If your issue is still
reproducible or still valid, do not hesitate to reopen and reassign
it or reply to this email.
Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.
Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
