Please allow JPEG files to have their captions edited directly (rather
than using a separate text file).
(I'd just like to say that having looked at most of the other image
viewers in Debian, feh is the only one that is solid IMO; the rest
have bugs, horrible UIs or performance problems. The only other thing
that could be improved is rotation as fast as eog's.)

Hi,
do clean up the BTS I'm closing this bug report after having talked with
upstream about this problem. The rationale to not fix this bug is that
feh should work independently from actual image format. Because only
JPEG has this CAPTION feature and not all other supported image formats
this would introduce an inconsistency in format handling and will not be
supported by upstream.
If you would like to see a record in the BTS of this feature request
feel free to reopen the bug. But it will be tagged 'wontfix' to express
the logic given above.
