Thank you for maintaining the Debian Linux system.
I upgraded my Debian 3.1 system to kernel-image 2.6.8
This broke the Xwindows system, since it could not access the mouse.
After some debugging, I found out that the mousedev module was 
not loaded.
# modprobe mousedev
solves this problem.

I beleive that mousedev should be loaded by default during boot.

I believe you do not understand how hardware detection works.
If you want to have mousedev automatically loaded, install hotplug and
build your kernel with CONFIG_ISAPNP=3Dy.
