As per policy 10.1 it would be nice if
DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS="nostrip debug noopt" apt-get --build source gnucash
actually produced binaries with debugging information. I'm currently
recompiling for the second time to check if simply adding
CFLAGS="-g"
to debian/rules does the trick.

Hi,
since gnucash 2.2.9-2 you can install the package gnucash-dbg which
contains the debug symbols. The build options DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS="nostrip
debug noopt" don't make much sense in this situation, so I close this
bug as fixed in Gnucash 2.2.9-2.
