using iiim with gnome apps (such as gedit, galeon) won't display+hide
the choice of (Chinese) characters correctly, which can cause the
application to crash when exiting while characters are still being
displayed.
Example:
I start gedit, and with a right-click choose iiim. Two characters appear
on the bottom left edge of the gedit window. I hit ctrl-space to change
to Chinese input (pinyin). I type 'wo', which is being displayed
inversely (white on black), but nothing else.
I use Alt-Tab to change to another window, and back. Now I can see a
little window in the foreground showing various characters matching my
input. I choose any of them typing its number, and it appears, but
the little window still stays in the foreground, unchanged. It stays
there even when I switch back to 'default' input method with ctrl-space
and the right-click menu choice.
When I quit gedit (or galeon accordingly) now, a popup window tells me
it has crashed (without / before asking if I want to save my work!).
After that, the foreground window disappears together with the gedit
window.
In the course of this interaction, iiim dumps a lot of messages to
.xsession-errors, which I have attached.
With the input method on, and Chinese input activated, I cannot delete
characters; I can edit almost normally (no reaction when I type German
umlaut characters on my keyboard, although they work well with no input
method selected) with Chinese input off, but once I do that, I can't
input anything any more in pinyin, I get neither the inverse characters
nor the foreground window. This can only be reset by choosing default
input method and then iiim again.
I can't get iiim to work with any application but the gnome apps: xterm,
openoffice just behave as if it's not there. Fedora people report
success on all of these issues with Fedora Core 2 (where is GIMLET for
Debian?) using a higher build number - so I wonder if it's a
configuration issue (if this can't be done automatically, I'd love some
userfriendly documentation, explaining the setup step-by-step) or a bug
solved upstream??

remain open for older distributions.
