pdftoppm has an option -r to specify the desired resolution for bitmap
generation. However, this is required to be an integer. Thus I get
either a bitmap with 1023 or 1028 pixels in width instead of the 1024 I
wanted. The -r option should accept rational numbers instead.

Totally different code base with nw works are used these days.
