When I use, say “xpdf -remote "a" -raise -reload a.pdf”, xpdf prints
the list options (instead of reloading the file)... one of which is
indeed “-reload”!

Hi,
xpdf -reload: means
-reload : reload xpdf remove server window (with -remote only)
-raise : raise xpdf remote server window (with -remote only)
Clearly s/remove/remote/ . This is doc bug. I am fixing and pending.
Report does not sounds like "REMOTE SERVER MODE". So this is user problem.
Program is doing what it says to do but you need to read man page.
This was not a bug.
