>From the preinst, I infer that the postinst used to restart the
daemon, but that it could cause spurious reboots for some versions of
the watchdog driver.
Since linux 2.4, the watchdog device can be closed cleanly and the
watchdog timer stopped. Since 5.2.3-1, the watchdog daemon sends the
magic "V" sequence to the kernel before closing the watchdog
device. Therefore, spurious reboots should not happen anymore. Then
maybe you should add the restart command back to the postinst.
Or maybe the restart should only be attempted with kernels > 2.4.
Or maybe this should be user-configurable (via debconf?).
