Package: man-db
Version: 2.5.7-6
Severity: important

Hi,

today I upgraded a lenny system to squeeze.
locale is set to de_DE.UTF-8.

During the upgrade I literally got hundreds of warnings from manconv:

processing triggers for man-db:
perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
        LANGUAGE = (unset),
        LC_ALL = (unset),
        LANG = "de_DE.UTF-8"
    are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C").
/usr/bin/mandb: can't set the locale; make sure $LC_* and $LANG are
correct
manconv: can't set the locale; make sure $LC_* and $LANG are correct
manconv: can't set the locale; make sure $LC_* and $LANG are correct
manconv: can't set the locale; make sure $LC_* and $LANG are correct
manconv: can't set the locale; make sure $LC_* and $LANG are correct
...

I don't know if this is ultimately a perl issue or not.
But it definitly decreases the upgrade process and we might even
consider it release critical.

If you need more information, please let me know.

Michael

 man-db (2.5.2-5) stable; urgency=low

   * Backport from 2.5.8:
     - Warnings about unrecognised locales are now suppressed if the
       DPKG_RUNNING_VERSION environment variable is set (i.e. man-db is
       running within a Debian package's maintainer script), since the system
       locales are often out of sync with the C library in that context.
       Thanks to the Debian Perl maintainers for the idea (closes: #605790).
