I upgraded amarok about 3.5 hours ago. It immediately started
"updating system configuration". That was 3.5 hours ago, it is still
doing this. I cancelled it about 20 minutes ago, and then restarted
amarok. Same thing. Sometimes the progress bar moves quickly, sometimes
slowly. It never seems to finish.

You apparently do not realize what unstable IS. It's a *development*
distribution. Things break, unstable systems do not even boot. If you are
afraid to deal with this, do not use unstable. Simple as that.
You also do not realize that Amarok 2.4 works well (enough) for many people
including me. It does not work for you but well, the world does not circle
only around you. Overall, 2.4 turned out to be a somewhat buggy release but
that's life. You have a choice to downgrade anyway (snapshot.debian.org).

Suite yourself. Amarok started for you after running kbuildsycoca4 so the bug
in its original incarnation is no longer there.
