Package: hotplug
Version: 0.0.20040329-25
Severity: normal

Hi,
i can't get direct rendering in Xorg because of wrong module
load order.

I looked at Xorg log and got :

(II) RADEON(0): [drm] DRM interface version 1.2
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] created "radeon" driver at busid
"pci:0000:00:10.0"
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] added 8192 byte SAREA at 0xe20ff000
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] mapped SAREA 0xe20ff000 to 0x320b9000
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] framebuffer handle = 0x98000000
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] added 1 reserved context for kernel
(WW) RADEON(0): [agp] AGP not available
(EE) RADEON(0): [agp] AGP failed to initialize. Disabling the DRI.
(II) RADEON(0): [agp] You may want to make sure the agpgart kernel
module
is loaded before the radeon kernel module.
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] removed 1 reserved context for kernel
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] unmapping 8192 bytes of SAREA 0xe20ff000 at
0x320b9000

Then if i stop X, and reload radeon, i get Direct rendering.
So i first tried to add agpgart at head of /etc/modules to make sure
it get loaded first, but it did not help. So i added

pre-install radeon modprobe agpgart

to modutils/actions and update-modules. Same problem.

Dunno if it's related, but in dmesg, i found :

Linux agpgart interface v0.101 (c) Dave Jones
[drm] Initialized drm 1.0.0 20040925
[drm] Initialized radeon 1.16.0 20050311 on minor 0: ATI Technologies
Inc M9+ 5C63 [Radeon Mobility 9200 (AGP)]
<snip>
[drm:radeon_cp_init] *ERROR* radeon_cp_init called without lock held
[drm:drm_unlock] *ERROR* Process 5955 using kernel context 0
[drm] Module unloaded
[drm] Initialized drm 1.0.0 20040925
[drm] Initialized radeon 1.16.0 20050311 on minor 0: ATI Technologies
Inc M9+ 5C63 [Radeon Mobility 9200 (AGP)]
agpgart: Putting AGP V2 device at 0000:00:0b.0 into 4x mode

Looks like first load fails where second works and enables direct
rendering.

This is major issue to me, as i have to restart X if i want to enjoy
direct rendering. Let me know if you need further info. Thanks.

No wonder, considering that modutils is not used with 2.6 kernels.
Try /etc/modprobe.d/, but do not forget that the syntax is different.

Anyway, it's the radeon module being broken. hotplug does not and will
never have a way to load drivers in a specific order, the kernel driver
should be fixed (I know that there is at least an open bug about this,
so I am closing this one).
