The gnome-volume-control doesn't appear to interact well with alsa.
If I have amixer set to mute the PC Speaker and have those volumes
set to zero (with these changes saved in alsa using alsactl) I find that
starting the gnome-volume-control panel totally undoes those changes.
Upon launching the gnome-volume-control, the PC Speaker becomes unmuted
and the volumes are reset to non-zero values. It would be nice if
the gnome-volume-control would at least retain the current sound settings
that alsa is using.

Alsa seems to work fine in recent versions of gnome (at least since 2.6 iirc).
Please reopen if you still have problems with it.
