Severity: important

The behaviour of the challenge/responce mechanism allows for remote
validation and discovery of valid usernames.
When a login is attempted with an invalid username, a pseudo-random
challenge is issued. After several attempts, this challenge varies
signifigantly from the normal challenges in that the sequence number
AND seed are widely varied, where for a valid user, they would not
unless the user reinitilized their OPIE key during the attack.
This indirectly leads to a possible means for an attacker to verify
the existance of a user account, and through brute force attacks
discover some or all of the user accounts on a system.
Workaround:
None at present short of disabling OPIE logins. In this case
the benefits of using OPIE probably outweigh this risk from this
rather small information leak. Site which use OPIE authentication are
encouraged to monitor for suspicious login attempts which could indicate an
attempt to probe the system for valid usernames.
