Package: freemind
Severity: important

freemind declares a dependency on "j2re1.4 | java2-runtime". Is this really
necessary? No such package exists, apart from the Blackdown kit (which is
way too far out of date). Could "java2-runtime" be better replaced by some
other dependency that is in the archive, or could freemind just be left with
java-virtual-machine (which you do have) ?

To be more specific, I can grab the jre rpms from sun.com and convert them
to debs using alien. But those Sun deb packages have the name "jre", not
j2re1.4. Since freemind is in contrib and expects Sun's java packages to be
installed anyway, then it should be free to use the ones that Sun actually
provides.

A dependency of "j2re1.4 | jre | java2-runtime" would cover it, I think.

I'm marking this bug as important, since at the moment freemind will not
install (without the Blackdown debs), even when Sun debs (converted rpms) are
installed.

Drew

p.s. how does gcj or the other free java implementations currently manage
with freemind?

Hi,

to make a long story short:

1. you're tapping into a lot of good questions which are not easy to
solve, and don't have much priority because mainly related to non-free
Java implementations (the strategy of the Java team is to go for free
implementations of Java, gcj being one of them).

2. your remarks show that you haven't read the Debian Java Policy (part o=
f
java-package). As a user, that's OK but you will need to believe me on
point 3 because I won't try to reexplain everything.

3. I did my best with the dependencies to follow the Debian (Java)
policy(ies) and be useful to the users, and came to the point where I
think that there is no perfect solution in the current state of the
policies. So, I won't change anything anymore unless someone points me to
the perfect solution I missed.

Sorry for this one, I close the bug as I forgot to do it before,
Eric
