There is no battery/ in /proc/acpi. I have tried updating to 2.6.38, 
but that did not fix the problem (and switched back to 2.3.32). 

Using the latest BIOS from Toshiba.

Why should there be one? You might want to check /sys/class/power_supply/.

Anyway, there's nothing acpi can do about this. This tool only displays the
information the kernel provides.
