Abstract problem: a timeout signal running 'sleep 10' every 30
seconds will make the notmuch interface completely unresponsive for
10 seconds every 30 seconds. This leads us to believe that awesome
blocks while processing signals.
This is the cause of bug we've been seeing with the desktop becoming
unresponsive during 'notmuch new, and we thought it was the kernel's
fault. Instead, it was the acpi hook for battery level, which
blocked on I/O at times and hence caused notmuch to block and appear
locked up for several seconds at a time.

Yeah, unfortunately nobody wrote a configuration file parser in Lua yet.
:)
I'm closing this bug since it's not one and we found a solution. :-)
