Package: watchdog
Version: 5.9-1
Severity: minor

Hi,

I decided to try this package and was soon confronted with log messages like:

wd_keepalive[1325]: starting watchdog keepalive daemon (5.9):
    wd_keepalive[1325]: int=10 alive=(null) realtime=yes
wd_keepalive[1325]: stopping watchdog keepalive daemon (5.9)

alive=(null) was suspicious at once, but I've got no idea what that is.
Since the man page of wd_keepalive states it open /dev/watchdog, I didn't
think it was necessary to fill in /etc/watchdog.conf.

Irrespective of the incorrect man page, the logs should look more like

wd_keepalive[xxx]: starting watchdog keepalive daemon (5.9)
    wd_keepalive[xxx]: interval=10s, device=/dev/watchdog, realtime=yes

or

wd_keepalive[xxx]: starting watchdog keepalive daemon (5.9)
wd_keepalive[xxx]: aborting: no watchdog device configured

Btw. the documentation could also tell something about why this function was
broken into two daemons. I've got a tip, but still... :)

Btw. why does the daemon keep opening /proc/uptime? Just to check if there
are file descriptors available?

Thanks,
Feri.
