It seems that somehow, between auctex and preview-latex-style, the
file /usr/share/emacs21/site-lisp/preview-latex.el is being
autogenerated on my system. Surely this should go in the auctex
subdirectory?

Hi,
preview-latex-style does not depend on auctex, and could be installed
even when auctex is not; therefore "preview-latex.el" shouldn't go it to
the "/usr/share/<flavor>/site-lisp/auctex/" subdirectory, and should
rather stay at the top level in "/usr/share/<flavor>/site-lisp/".
