The menu's runs constantly on the background. Attaching to the process via
ltrace and strace shows that even when idle it makes a few dozen high-level
function calls (HAL, gtop, etc.) and *thousands* of low-level calls to read and
gettimeofday in periods of only a few seconds.
I'm not sure whether the reads and gettimeofday calls are an artifact of
attaching to the process with strace (although this method has been recently
recommended by some notable GNOME hackers), but the higher level calls are
definitely there. This might even be a good point to begin tracing the memory
leaks I reported in my other post.
I finally found upstream's BTS. It would be good to ship the project's README
file in Debian, as it contains this information.
