The split command is poorly documented on the man page. All one
manages to do is create a second window with nothing in it.

You had better give examples of how one could do something useful.

This has been fixed at least in the screen version which is in Squeeze
by adding the sentence "Use "focus" to toggle between regions."

Therefore closing this bug accordingly.

I agree with Nico that the explanations elsewhere in the man page
should suffice for this.

I don't think that's a good idea. Usually I split windows and then
choose an existing window to be displayed in the until then blank
half.
