Package: synaptic
Version: 0.57-2
Severity: normal
Synaptic doesn't seem to honor Package upgrade behaviour (default distribution)
to display package descriptions, at least when the default distribution is not
the highest one.
I am experiencing this behavior for all the packages I verified, that is
gnumeric and ssh. I noticed the behavior when ssh was described as a
transitional package on an Etch/Sid mix. Note that Default-Release is
also set to testing.
In case the behavior is intentional, remember that while a few
description changes are fixes that apply to old versions, most
(hopefully, anyway) are updates reflecting changes in the package. For
example, seeing ssh described as a transitional package depending on
openssh-client and openssh-server led me to believe I better try to
install the real package I needed, which failed since unstable had
broken dependencies for that one. When I understood the real problem,
installing ssh through synaptic worked, installing the testing version
as expected.
Before sending this report, I realized that this may actually concern more
package properties than just the description. The dependencies have a
"Dependencies of the latest version" option, but maybe a general option
for determining which distribution package properties must be taken from
should be implemented.
This bug was present in sarge's synaptic.
