Package: automake1.7
Version: 1.7.6-1
Severity: wishlist

autoconf and libtool both provide the latest upstream releases now,
should automake join the club and provide 1.7 when "automake" is asked
for, rather than the older 1.4 release -- which is a bit crusty and not
quite as nice to live with :o)

I realise that automake1.6 and automake1.7 won't work with autoconf2.13,
and that making autoconf2.13 inconvenient to use is a bridge nobody
wants to cross yet...

but I've already crossed it. The current libtool package is 1.5, which
will not work with autoconf2.13, in order to get a version that does,
users need to install libtool1.4 instead.

Maybe what we need is a dummy package:

Package: autotools
Depends: autoconf (>> 2.57), automake (>> 1.7), libtool (>> 1.5), autotools-dev

And then for those who refuse to abandon the sinking ship of
autoconf2.13, another one

Package: older-autotools
Depends: autoconf2.13, automake1.4, libtool1.4, autotools-dev

(I'll maintain such a package, if it's considered desirable)

With automake 1.11.3 now being "automake", this bug is kinda fixed.
