As discussed in comp.databases.berkeley-db[1], a bug has been found.
The return value of the DbSecondaryKeyCrator is currently being
ignored on the java layer. In that thread there is a patch that fixes
the problem.
The bug was already forwarded to upstream, but I think it would be nice
to have this fix in debian even before they release the fix.

Hello,
db4.2 has been removed several years ago and this bug report is orphan.
Sorry that the bug report was not dealt with when it was due, but it
doesn't make much sense to keep it open now. Please reopen against
current versions of libdb if there are still issues.
