I'm using Gnus Version: 5.8.3-9 to read my mail.
Please let me know if this bug report should be filed against Gnus
instead of Emacs; or feel free to reassign it. This is one of those
cases where it's hard to tell which package is at fault.
I sent myself a message with an attached JPEG image, and Gnus
displayed the message like this

That's fine and normal. But when I put point on the line that begins
with `[2.', and pressed Enter, Emacs said that it was starting `xv' to
view the image, and then it hung. It's not surprising that `xv'
failed to start, because I don't have it installed!
There seem to be two bugs here:
* Emacs shouldn't have hung while trying to start `xv'; instead it
should have reported a simple error message: "Can't start `xv'
because No such file or directory".
* Emacs shouldn't have even tried to start `xv' in the first place: my
/etc/mailcap doesn't mention `xv' at all, but does mention a number
of other programs that are capable of handling image/jpeg. And I
even have a ~/.mailcap that asks to have the Gimp handle all images.

Hello,
Thanks for your interest in improving Debian, and sorry that the bugs
were not fully resolved in due time.
emacs21 packages have been removed from testing in 2009 [1], not
present even in the current stable. Consequently, these bugs are now
orphan (without maintainer assigned) so they probably will not be
attended/noticed further.

The bugs deemed valid are going to be verified and reassigned, but the
current bugs that I'm closing now are very ancient (more than 10 years
sometimes) and marked as unreproducible years ago. Please comment if
you want think that some of the raised questions are still pending and
need to be addressed differently (e.g., reassigned to other packages,
etc.).
