Package: cupsys
Version: 1.2.1-2
Severity: wishlist
After upgrading to the latest cupsys package in testing, the CUPS
printer no longer appeared as a samba share (not visible from a
Windows machine nor a Linux box running smbclient).
After spending several hours trying to track the problem down, finally
came across Debian bug #310604, filed against samba, which explains
that names longer than 12 characters don't appear in browse lists
(should have remembered that...). New cupsys package had me recreate
all printers, and offered names like
HP_PSC_2200_Series_USB_1
which wasn't changeable, even if I'd known that I should change it.
Finally changed the printer name in /etc/cups/printers.conf manually
to "HP_PSC_2210", and the printer once more appeared on the Windows
box and from Linux via smbclient.
Perhaps a warning that long filenames don't work well with samba would
be appropriate. It might also help if we could rename a printer from
the web interface (apologies if it's possible, but I couldn't find out
how).

Dear Debian User,
This bug report was submitted against a version of CUPS that is no
longer supported in Debian. Use of our limited, volunteer supported
resources is best served by not keeping around old, hardware-specific
and inactive bugs for longer than desirable, so the report is now being
closed.
You may, of course, wish to review the reported problem. It would be
appreciated if any future investigation could be conducted using the
testing or unstable distributions. If considered necessary, a new bug
report, possibly referencing this one, would be submitted. Please note
there are now separate cups and cups-filters packages.
Thank you for your report.
Regards,
Brian.
