Package: cupsys
Version: 1.1.23-12
Severity: wishlist

With two printers, they can come in as /dev/lp0 or as /dev/lp1 depending
on power status. This results in mismatching encodings and jobs.

Solution is to use udev to map permanent dev names with udev. On my
system, I have...

tony@sena:/store/new$ ls -l /dev/printers/*
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 6 2006-02-07 12:36 /dev/printers/c40ux -> ../lp0
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 6 2006-02-07 12:36 /dev/printers/hpoj4215 -> ../lp1

There appears to be no way to set up the above devices in the web
interface (http://localhost:631/printers, Add Printer).

Workaround is to use "first USB printer" and "second USB printer", then
stop CUPS (/etc/init.d/cupsys stop), edit /etc/cups/printers.conf, and
start CUPS (/etc/init.d/cupsys start).

CUPS seems to work just fine with udev-created symlinks to the actual
devices.

I can provide the udev recipe to make the symlinks if anyone thinks it's
relevant.

Dear Debian User,

This bug report was submitted against a version of CUPS that is no
longer supported in Debian. Use of our limited, volunteer supported
resources is best served by not keeping around old, hardware-specific
and inactive bugs for longer than desirable, so the report is now being
closed.

You may, of course, wish to review the reported problem. It would be
appreciated if any future investigation could be conducted using the
testing or unstable distributions. If considered necessary, a new bug
report, possibly referencing this one, would be submitted. Please note
there are now separate cups and cups-filters packages.

Thank you for your report.

Regards,

Brian.
