I maintain a package (acetoneiso) that has a dependency on it, and I have put
it being built only on linux systems just because of this. If this issue could
be solved, then we could use it also on other OS.

Hello Nick,
I have recently prepared a QA upload for cdrdao and discovered your bug
report. Cdrdao has been building successfully on kfreebsd for nine
months now. It seems other architectures, except the hurd, are also
supported by cdrdao now.
I presume the issue is hereby solved and it should be possible for your
package acetoneiso to build for linux-any and kfreebsd-any.
Regards,
Markus
